Game Changer 2-1 Brodsworth Welfare Social

Paul Holland - Game Changer FC

OH, WHAT A FEELING…. Game Changer registered their first ever competitive victory following a professional 2-1 win over Brodsworth Welfare Social in the Sunday Flourish League competition.

Jack Riley scored a first-half-brace to gift the hosts a two-goal lead before the visitors scored in the dying embers to set up a tense and nervy finish. But they held on to the final whistle which was met with a joyous celebration. They had twice tasted victory previously, having beaten Sands United and The Old George away from home in friendly fixtures. This victory against Brodsworth was their first on home soil and their third against Doncaster opposition.

Game Changer came into this fixture still searching for their first points in a competitive fixture. They were defeated at Yorkshire Wanderers last weekend by four goals to one in the Fair Play League. Kevin Laws netted a scant consolidation from the penalty spot in the final minutes after the S6 side had already bagged their four goals in the second half.

The Oranges began their Flourish League campaign with a defeat to Hillsborough RvB, whilst Brodsworth drew 1-1 with Aston Swallownest Juniors White. Changer coach, Jamie Moore, was without; Matthew Townsend, Joe Stones, and Sam Taylor, who was all unavailable for the clash against Brodsworth.

The hosts won the toss and chose to play uphill in the first half. They began brightly and through Riley's forced run saw his cross deflected for a corner. The ball was cleared from the resulting set piece, and Liam Potter recycled the ball before Brandon Jones fired narrowly over the bar.

The hosts took the lead on 17 minutes from Laws throw in the final third. Jones clipped at goal, lobbed over the keeper, and agonisingly crashed against the woodwork, leaving Riley with the simplest of header into an empty net.

Changer netted theirs and Riley’s second goal of the afternoon on 26 minutes from debutant Lewis Ripley’s ball over the defence. Riley beat his marker for pace and coolly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper.

Brodsworth created their first meaningful chance shortly afterwards, forcing the keeper into a save. They had created a chance on ten minutes after the Oranges cleared from a corner but the shot from the edge of the area flew high and wide.

Brodsworth thought they had pulled a goal back on 44 minutes after bundling the ball home however the goal was disallowed for offside. At the other end, Jones effort from the edge of the area was spectacularly saved by the keeper at the expense of a corner.

The hosts held their own in the second half and looked good for the victory until, with six minutes remaining, they conceded- setting up a nervy tense final few minutes.

Chances were few and far between but made best use of the downhill advantage. From distance, Jones assessed the keeper, as did substitute Paul Holland but both failed to find the back of the net.

Brodsworth scored moments from time after a cross (wind assisted) sailed over keeper Liam Cole and landed awkwardly into the net. It was a disappointing goal to concede. Rarely had Cole been tested but on the occasions, he was called into action, he was excellent at keeping the Adwick Le Street based side at bay.

In the aid of securing their first victory, the home side threw bodies into defence and whilst the visitors came close with a strike which clipped the top of the crossbar, the hosts kept their cool to ride it out until the bitter end and was overjoyed to hear the sound of the referees whistle.
